Students and Staff Helping Orchard Park Students
Article Written By: Tristen Christie

SSHOPS, “Students and Staff Helping Orchard Park Students”, is a group at Orchard Park Secondary School. Our main goal is to help as many underprivileged students at our school as possible. This year’s Christmas drive has been the most successful yet and eleven students have received gift boxes worth over $100.00 each. The student's reacted to these gifts with endless gratitude. So many people and groups have contributed to our initiative: teachers, custodians, the school nurse, office staff, E.A.’s, parents, students, 99 Cent Depot,
and Fortinos. The Orchard Park Business department contributed by selling gift mugs; sales totaled almost $200.00. In addition, the SSHOPS committee collected spare change at lunch and sold Candy Grams. Further, the Winona Mens club generously donated a total of $715.00 and has promised ongoing financial support in the future. We look forward to continuing our relationship with this kindhearted group. Our total donation this year, which includes money, gift cards and gift items, was approximately $1300.00. Our goal for this year is to focus on the “Clothing Closet” (clothes, school supplies, toiletries, footwear, umbrella's, etc.) so that students at Orchard Park will be able to receive the articles of clothing that they need. We would like to thank everyone for their generous contributions and continued support for SSHOPS at Orchard Park Secondary School and hope to have even more success in the years to come.

Clothing Closet

SSHOPS has been working on the organization of a clothing closet over the past several months. The Clothing Closet has been fully dependant on the donations of other Orchard Park students, as well as Orchard Park staff, to donate their gently used clothing. The proceeds of the Clothing Closet are donated to students at Orchard Park that are in need of necessities. The Clothing Closet has been opened for buisness since April 3rd 2008.

Students and staff are welcome to purchase items at very low prices on Tuesdays and Fridays at lunch and after school. If students would like to view the items in private, they need to see their guidance counsellor for entry.

If you are cleaning out your closet, bring in any gently used clothing, footwear and accessories. Items can be dropped off in guidance or directly to the Clothing Closet, located across from the main office.
