S.T.o.P
IS NOT OUT TO GET YOU!

S.T.O.P
is not out to get all the smokers at Orchard Park but simply to
inform students and others about the dangers of smoking!
Mr Puley said “I started this group because it was for a
good cause, it links to media, and it provides an alternative
club and outlet for students beyond athletic activities.”
This was very brave and out going of Mr. Puley considering the
fact that he was a new teacher at Orchard Park and didn’t
really know what to expect.
Mr. Puley said “Prior to starting S.T.O.P, I did smoke.”
Although, this was not expected, it made sense because who better
to have formed S.T.O.P, then a person who used to smoke and smoked
at the time and knows first hand what it can do to you.
Mr. Puley said, ”We are not an anti-smoking group, we just
want to help people make smarter, healthier choices.”
S.T.O.P continues to generate awareness and inspires others through
future events.

Orchard Park Putting A S.T.O.P. to Tobacco at
Orchard Park
Hamilton Spectator
February 19, 2007
On October 25th, at Hamilton City Hall, Mayor DiIanni honoured
thewinners of the 2006 Teen Tobacco
Challenge Awards. Once again, Stop Tobacco at Orchard Park received
commendation at the ceremony. As "Paparazzi" PJ Eagle
snapped photos for yearbook, the Mayor invited Mr. Puley and Kassandra
Kearse to the podium and explained that the 6th annual Teen Tobacco
Challenge was held between April-June 2006 and one of the winning
participants was Orchard Park with S.T.O.P (Stop Tobacco at Orchard
Park), which was awarded for the campaign with the Greatest Impact.
Over the past two years, STOP has become a leader among teen tobacco
advocacy groups - generating awareness of the hazards of smoking
and tobacco related issues. In recent months, STOP has also been
recognized by Jennifer Mossop (MPP for Stoney Creek), Ontario’s
Minister of Health, George Smitherman, Canada’s Minister
of Health, Tony Clement, and Dr. Chris Spence, Director of Education
for the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board.
The 2006-2007 S.T.O.P campaign has begun
and has grown exponentially in numbers from 10 participants to
almost 30. In addition, Mr. Puley and S.T.O.P welcome Miss Hyde
and Ms. McLean to the team as co-advisors. STOP is gaining momentum
and this year’s activities may be the best yet. Stay tuned
as the revolution continues......
