Building Careers From the Ground Up

Twenty-three students (20 boys, 3 girls) in the Specialist High Skills Major program, Building Careers From the Ground Up, took part in an exciting event on November 5. The students and teachers stood beaming on the ramp of the new Haida’s Cutter Pavilion. They had worked diligently during the last 6 weeks to complete the 36’ by 18’ addition that now houses the viewing gallery for the restored cutter, ticket kiosk, gift shop and working office for the director of the Friends of the Haida . The new addition is to house the 'motor cutter' which is a replica of the one used to save many lives aboard the Haida's sister ship, the "Athabaskan". The building was built from the foundation up to the shingles, electrical wiring, insulation, drywall, trim and exterior decks and landings.

Although most of the students had spent at least one week working at the site, not one of them who signed on for the building construction program last spring had any idea in September that they would be working around a valuable national historic artifact and expecting a special dignitary to mark the opening. Yet here they were, on a blustery day, smiling, sporting new sweatshirts and hardhats supplied by the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program, and ready to shake hands with the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall. As the Prince walked up the ramp, HRH took the time to speak to each of the teachers and students and to offer congratulations. For both teachers and students this was a very proud moment and one not soon forgotten.

On this rainy day, these students experienced not only the satisfaction of a job well done, but also the connection to the larger Hamilton community and its history This was a moment to revel in accomplishment but also to feel the purpose and meaning of a building to its community. Under temperamental weather conditions, amidst all of the pomp and circumstance and veterans reminding us to wear poppies over the heart, it was for these students and their teachers a day of celebration, remembrance and gratitude.
